The Great Barrier Reef!
Yesterday was our trip out to the great barrier reef. It was an early start at the boat for 7:30 and we travelled for a couple of hours out into the ocean. It was a bit choppy on the way out and I got sea sick and just could not shift it. Tried all the tricks, watching the horizon and moving with the boat and everything. We eventually dropped the anchor out in the open water and got dressed into our one-piece lycra stinger suits, very attractive. I had put my name down to try out scuba diving, but they did that straight away and i needed some more time for my stomach to settle! We got in the water and it was perfectly calm and there were fish everywhere, mainly small ones in this part of the ocean. I swam about with ashling and mel and these tiny yellow fish followed us around everywhere coming right up into our faces and around our hands. Then we got back on board and they served a big buffet lunch. I was still feeling queezy so just had some fruit, bit annoying i missed out on the seafood! Then we travelled a lit bit further out to a sand island inhabited by hundreds of birds. A smaller boat transferred us all directly onto the island but here there were much bigger waves so it was quite hard getting into the water with the flippers on, had to walk backwards to stop getting knocked over. The reef was amazing at this part and there were much larger fish. At one point Ashing and I were swimming near out boat and they were throwing dead fish our way and these huge fish were coming straight at us, quite scary but fun. Mel saw a turtle but couldnt find us to show us and sara saw a shark. Still felt pretty rough on the way back and hadnt eaten much all day so we took full advantage of the meal vouchers our hostel gives us! Having a lazy day today, going to get some food now!

It was only a few days ago we were trudging down the road in the snow and ice to go to the airport and say goodbye. Now you're on the other side of the world, it's summer and you're back with Ashling!
ReplyDeleteIt's been great having such regular updates on here about everything you've both been doing - can't wait to see the pictures. It's incredible just how much you've managed to fit into this action-packed holiday so far - and you've only been there a few days. The things you and Ashling have got lined up for the next few weeks are amazing - you're in for such a good time.
Nana was here yesterday and she sends her love. She really enjoyed reading your blog - said it felt like you weren't so far away.
Looking forward to the next installment!

Poor you, seasickness is horrid. Ask Pete about his one day at sea (mackeral fishing) and you can compare sickness notes! Hope you feel much better today. (Get to a chemist and buy some motion sickness tabs - you'll feel so much better if you're on the water again). Looking forward to seeing the pictures, love from us both, Judith & Peter
ReplyDeleteAnd there's us swimming around in flood water from all the rain we're now having and the melting snow!!!
ReplyDeleteIt all sounds so exciting you lucky things!!!!!!
Made me feel quite sea sick thinking about it all and I would be exactly the same!! Prob' worse.
So glad that you are having such a good time and it's good to know you're safe!
Take care and give our love to Ashling.
